Transistor size vs. a human hair



Nowadays, we could line up about 3500 transistors along the cross-section of a single human hair: I'm often trying to explain how small transistors are these days in every day language. One comparison I like is the size of the transistor to the diameter of a human hair. The current technology could line up about 3500 transistors along the cross-section of a single human hair. Transistors are smaller than viruses and are approaching the size a protein. The picture below gives an idea of the relative sizes of things around that scale.
